Kiran
Don't ever give up. I’ve gotten this far one day at a time, and you can too.
Hello, my name is Kiran and this is me…
I grew up in a religious family, surrounded by our community. I was born Saima, a beautiful girl with older brothers who protected me. I experienced abuse and trauma as a child. I also knew that I wasn’t born in the right body and needed to change that.
I was disowned by my entire family and community at a time when I needed them most, I felt like an orphan being punished for who I am.
I suffered a breakdown, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and ended up in hospital. When I was feeling better, I moved in to a flat in a big house where I began to feel normal and safe to be myself.
My key worker helped me with everyday tasks and helped me to believe in me.
I have undergone gender reasignment and I'm truly happy. The scars of my journey will always be with me but everyday they remind me of my strength. I have trained as an adult nurse and now I'm the person giving the support, care and guidance, advising others that just because the journey is tough, doesn't mean you will never be happy. My life is great now, becoming a nurse has provided me with a fulfilling and rewarding career. I’m building a healthy relationship with my family, and I have my own flat.
